The Lady Mustangs opened their 2021-22 season with wins over Calvin and Coalgate.

Monday night’s opener with Calvin saw the Lady Mustangs come up with the 50-36 win. Maggie Yarbrough led Allen with 16 points, Stoney Cully was right on her heels with 15, Brooklyn Sanders 8, Kaylee Davis 6, Taylor Harrison 2 and Alexis Slabaugh 2.

Calvin’s Allie Harrison led all scorers with 18, Brylee Swadley 9, Mena Harrison 6 and Andi Winningham 2.

Tuesday night the teams traveled to Coalgate and the Allen girls came out with a 71-32 win. The first quarter was all Allen posting a 20-2 lead. Allen scorers Kaylee Davis was the leading scorer with 20 points 3 rebounds and 4 assists, Brooklyn Sanders 11 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals, Stoney Cully 11 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals, Maycee Davis 9 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, Ava Laden 8 points, 1 assist and 2 steals, Maggie Yarbrough 4 points, 6 rebounds, Cheyene McCarn 3 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal, Alexis Slabaugh 2 points 5 rebounds, Lilly Matthews 2 points, Taylor Harrison 1 point, 1 rebound, 3 assist and 1 steal.

“Offensively we were clicking, Kaylee led our first quarter scoring with 3 3’s, and that offensive mindset carried out through all 4 quarters, defensively we held them to 1 field goal in the quarter,” said Coach Dottie Slabaugh.

The Allen men had a rough opening game against a strong Calvin team and fell 55-67. The team rebounded the next night a defeated Coalgate 52-41.

“Calvin has a good team and for our first game of the season we learned a lot. The game Tuesday against Coalgate we played a lot better, maybe it was nerves or whatever. Lots of new players and players playing different positions but we are excited to get this season going,” said Coach Greg Mills

The teams travel to Asher on Friday before beginning the Conference Tournament on Monday with both the Allen boys and girls facing Stonewall. Girls tip of at 6 and the boys will follow at 7:30. The Tournament bracket can be found on page 7 of the Advocate.
