Recently, we celebrated Decoration Day. Sunday, one of my friends at church shared the following with me…
Over time, the words of our loved ones remain etched forever in our minds. Some people pick profound epitaphs that sum up their lives on their tombstones, while others choose humorous epitaphs to keep visitors amused. Some of the funniest and most memorable gravestone quotes ever include anything from dad jokes and puns to cautions about the hereafter, proving that death doesn’t have to be associated with only grief. So, enjoy some time chuckling at these humorous gravestones.
A Pure “I Told You So” Moment
We all know a hypochondriac or two, and sometimes these folks make us doubt their health claims since they do so frequently. It’s like the story of the kid who cried wolf, only that this individual claimed to be sick so many times that no one believed them until their death certificate was finally engraved.
The person whose name is on this tombstone obviously felt the need to continue their guilt trip even after burial. It›s amusing that they decided to have a stolen joke from Spike Milligan engraved on their tombstone. The fact that the gravestone bears a simple single-line quotation, and no identifying information is possibly the most bizarre aspect of this humorous memorial.
A Total Renegade Message
We can all agree that we have seen some hilarious and emotional tombstone inscriptions, but we don’t think there are any that are as bad as this one. The deceased, Samuel Whittemore, was beaten and abandoned, but he somehow managed to recover and live for 18 more years. If that isn’t legendary, we don’t know what is.
Considering that, at the time, the medical field was yet to receive as much advancement as it has today, what Samuel did was an act of bravery. The lad took the battle to the British soldiers and lived to tell the tale. As such, we’d think the epitaph would be better starting with “Here Lies A Legend...”
Penniless in the End; Still Enjoyed Life
Uncle Walter may not have been the one you go to for financial advice when he was still alive, but it’s obvious he was the go-to man who could teach a thing or two about living life to the fullest. Plus, you can tell from his sense of humor that you were always guaranteed good times with him.
He may have ended up penniless but imagine how dull his life would have been if he had done everything right. Of course, we’re not encouraging people to be reckless but let’s learn from Walter that life is for the living and that we don’t get do-overs.
People eager to share their recipes are one of the best in the world, and so is this late woman. Not only did she share her recipe while she was alive, but they also outlined it on her headstone so that anyone who sees it could also whip up their Christmas cookies.
Since this isn’t the first tombstone we’d see with recipes engraved on it, it’s safe to say that this is a common practice. We can only hope to find more exciting recipes around and for more complex meals. Chicken soup and cheesecakes are high on our priority list right now.
