4th Quarter Run Brings Victory for Mustangs

It took a fourth quarter hot streak to put the Mustangs into the winner circle at Monday night’s game in the first round of the Pottawatomie County Tournament at North Rock Creek, Shawnee. The 56-45 win will put them up against Wetumka tonight (Thursday, January 20 th ) at 8:30 p.m. with an 8-5 record on the year.

The first three quarters ended with a 40-point tie the Strother Yellowjackets. The Mustangs added 16 points in the fourth compared to only five for the ‘Jackets.

Coach Mills said, “A win is always good but we need to cutdown on turnovers and make cleaner passes. This was a very physical game but our boys held their own and came home with the win.”

Sophomore Garrett Nix led the Allen offense with a game-high 24 points. He finished 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. Brayden Tatum followed with 12 points for the Mustangs, while Will Kaminski just missed double figures with eight points before fouling out. Scoring for the Mustangs showed Garrett Nix with 24; Brayden Tatum with 12; Tagus Howard, 2; Easton Ledo, 6; Will Kaminski with 8; and Jake Beavert, 4.

The Lady Mustangs brought home a 47-17 win over Asher Lady Indians. This was the third time the two teams faced on the court this season with Allen the victor each time. The local Ladies advance to the semi-finals game this evening at 7:00 p.m. and will take on the Earlsboro Lady Wildcats. The Lady Mustangs currently hold a 11-2 record for the year and are ranked 18 th in Class A.

Cheyene McCarn was high scorer for the Lady Mustangs with 11, followed closely by Stoney Cully with 10. Also scoring for the Ladies were Taylor Harrison, 2; Ava Laden 7; Alexis Slabaugh, 4; Brooklyn Sanders, 6; and Kaylee Davis, 7.
